Material density
MDF is made by breaking down hardwood and softwood into wood fibers, and MDF is typically composed of 82% wood fibers, 9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue, 8% water, and 1% paraffin wax. The density is usually between 500 kg/m 3 (31 lb/ft 3) and 1,000 kg/m 3 (62 lb/ft 3). Density and the range of classification as light, standard, or high density boards is a misnomer and confusing. The density of the board is important when evaluated in relation to the density of the fibers used to manufacture the panel. A thick MDF panel with a density of 700-720 kg/ m3 may be considered high-density in the case of cork fiberboard, while a board of the same density made of hardwood fiber is not considered high-density.
