How Picture Frames Are Packed for Export: A Complete Guide for Wholesale Buyers
Let's be honest: The most expensive picture frame is not the one with gold leaf - it's the one that arrives broken.
We have seen it happen too many times with new buyers. They squeeze a supplier for the lowest possible price, the factory cuts $0.50 on packaging materials, and the buyer opens the container to find 20% of the glass shattered. That is a disaster for your profit margin and your brand reputation.
At Wamshin, we don't just build frames; we engineer them to survive a 30-day journey across the ocean. Here is the exact packaging standard we use to keep breakage rates under 1%.

The Hidden Enemies of Your Shipment
Picture frames appear rigid, but they are vulnerable. Professional packaging isn't just about wrapping; it's about countering specific threats:
- The "Drop": Accidental drops during loading are inevitable.
- The "Vibration": Weeks of truck and sea transport loosen V-nails and joints.
- The "Stack": Cartons at the bottom of a container must support hundreds of kilograms without buckling.
- The "Sweat": "Container rain" (moisture build-up) can warp MDF backboards if not sealed properly. (See our Solid Wood vs MDF Guide).
Decision 1: Glass vs. Plexiglass (The Real Market Trend)
We often get asked which is better. Here is the reality from our factory floor:
- Real Glass (Most Popular): About 80% of our wholesale clients still choose Real Glass. It offers the best scratch resistance and premium weight at a competitive price.
Note on Packaging: Our standard export packaging is sufficient for palletized bulk shipments. However, if you want maximum safety (e.g., Reinforced Styrofoam / 6-sided Foam), we can upgrade your packaging upon request. Please note this will slightly increase the unit cost. - Plexiglass (Acrylic): We usually recommend this specifically for pure E-commerce sellers (Amazon/Shopify) who ship single units via courier (UPS/FedEx). It eliminates breakage returns, but the raw material cost is higher than glass.
The Wamshin 5-Layer Protection Standard
We don't skip layers to save pennies. To ensure frames survive from our factory floor to your warehouse, we use this 5-layer system:
Layer 1: Surface Hygiene
Direct contact protection. We apply a protective film to acrylic sheets and use foam sheets between frames. No scratches allowed.
Layer 2: The Moisture Seal
Every unit is sealed in a fitted OPP bag or shrink-wrap. This is the only way to prevent dust and humidity damage.
Layer 3: Corner Armor (Critical)
Corners take 80% of impact damage. We learned long ago that simple paper corners aren't enough for heavy frames.
- Standard: Corrugated paper corners (for light frames).
- Recommended: EPE Foam Corners. These act like shock absorbers.
- Heavy Duty: Styrofoam Blocks for large formats or special glass orders.

Layer 4: Inner Presentation (Optional)
For retail-ready orders, we can pack frames in individual Pizza Boxes or Display Boxes. For bulk use (e.g., hotels), we bulk-pack to save you money.
Carton Strength: Don't Let Factories Cut Corners Here
This is the #1 place where cheap factories try to save money.
On a quotation sheet, "Export Carton" all looks the same. But in reality, a cheap standard carton will crush like a soda can when stacked at the bottom of a container. You must specify the paper quality.
Our "Non-Negotiable" Standards:
- The Paper Grade: We only use K=K hardness. Tap it with your knuckle - it should sound hard, almost like wood, not soft like a pizza box.
- Wall Thickness:
- For small frames (under 12x16"): 5-ply (Double Wall) is usually safe.
- For large frames (over 20x24") or ANY glass items: 7-ply (Triple Wall) is mandatory. Do not risk it with 5-ply.
Pro Tip: If you are shipping to Amazon FBA, tell us immediately. Their warehouses are brutal on packaging, and we need to upgrade the corner crush strength even further.
The "Drop Test" Validation
We don't guess; we test. Before mass production shipping, we conduct the standard ISTA 1A Drop Test simulation:
- Height: 76cm - 100cm (depending on weight).
- Sequence: 1 Corner -> 3 Edges -> 6 Faces.
- Result: Zero breakage allowed.

Palletizing: Balancing Safety and Volume
For FCL (Full Container Load) orders, loose loading (floor loading) maximizes the quantity inside. However, for LCL or distribution centers, Palletizing is necessary.
Wamshin offers customized pallet plans to ensure you don't pay for "shipping air." We calculate the optimal carton size to fit standard US (40x48") or Euro pallets (800x1200mm).

📦 Stop Paying for "Shipping Air"
Packaging isn't just about safety; it's about density. Bad packaging wastes container space.
